Since 1858, the Valle d'Aosta's famous cow fights have taken place all year long around the region. Area competitors tussle it out for the rights to prime grazing ground and a spot at the top of the social hierarchy within the herd, and the best of the best gather at the Bataille des Reines for the year-end title match. The final and most popular battle is staged in Aosta between two veterans who faced many difficult opponents to get there. The cows' herders take pride in their animals' strength, and the cow that stands their ground the longest is usually sold for a great deal of money, and its owners are rewarded with wine.
